Tuition Remission to International Student GSIs
Little known to many students, graduate students who hold a position as a GSI, GSR, reader, or tutor may be eligible for partial or full fee remissions, based on a few requirements. This also applies to non-resident and international students. According to the policies, located here, students must satisfy ALL of these criteria for fee remissions:
-
Be registered by established university deadlines, but no later than by the end of the fifth week of classes (September 22, 2017 for Fall 2017; February 16, 2018 for Spring 2018). You are responsible for meeting all university deadlines for registration and enrollment.
-
Be enrolled in at least 12 units no later than September 22, 2017 for Fall 2017; February 16, 2018 for Spring 2018, and remain enrolled in at least 12 units for the semester.
-
Be appointed for the semester. For dates, see the Academic Calendar. There are no fee remissions associated with appointments during Summer Session.
-
Be appointed in a fee remission eligible title at 25% time or greater.
-
Meet the academic requirements (minimum GPA, no more than 2 incompletes, etc.) for their type of appointment.
There are also time commitment requirements for students: GSIs, readers, and tutors must be working 25% or more of the time for partial fee remissions and GSRs must be working 25-44% of the time. Full fee remissions are available for GSRs working over 45% of the time.
